As the mourning month of Muharram arrives, Iranian cities, their mausoleums and mosques prepare for the occasion with black flags, wall hangings and canvases.
Mashhad city in Razavi Khorasan Province is of utmost importance for thousands of pilgrims who will attend the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) on the first night of Muharram to begin the mourning.
Each year, the black ceremonial flag is raised on the dome of his holy shrine to signify the arrival of Muharram and to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Islam's Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his 72 companions.
